My Canary Mr. Peepers LOVES This Healthy Treat

Canary Food - Wheatgrass

Canary Food - Wheatgrass

I freeze finely chopped broccoli and grated cooked organic egg shells in ice cubes and put them in a dish for my canary Mr. Peepers. He loves everything about it.

Darren's Comments:
Excellent suggestion. Broccoli and egg shell is the perfect snack for canaries.

It sounds like you're freezing the broccoli and shell in water, which would certainly be fine. I would also recommend packing the broccoli and shell into the ice cube tray with no water.

He is a very happy bird and sings constantly. His cage is next to our dining table and he loves to sit on his favorite perch and watch us at dinner time, we of course include him in the conversation!

He also loves live wheatgrass.

In the summer I plant some of the seeds from his feed mix in small pots and grow live food treats for him as well.

Darren's Comments:
Another excellent suggestion! I've been doing this for years and canaries love it. Plus, it's been shown that these sprouts are VERY high in nutrients.

He lives in a very large aviary type of cage with four finches, and he is in no uncertain terms the boss of the cage. He also has two parakeet sisters in a separate cage right next to his, and he and my Mother's cockatiel Elvis have become great friends, as Elvis always joins her for visits every month for several days.

The finches just had babies, and Mr. Peepers has taken the job of guarding the nest very seriously.

He is a much loved member of our family.

Thank you so much for these great tips Bonnie. I'm sure a lot of people and their canary birds will benefit from them.
