One legged canary

I have a beautiful opal singing canary, he had mites and I did not know it. He pecked it around the band and cut off circulation, the vet had to take his foot off.

Do you think he will ever perch on a perch again?

I took him back to the vet today and he is doing good.

My Peg Leg Canary JACK SPARROW
by: Ms Wren

JACK had his banded leg cause enough damage for an amputation. I was heartbroken to watch him readjust. Doc said he is super healthy (and Pirate tough). I took a Lowes paint stir stick and some wood glue and turned a portion of JACKS highest wood perch into a section that is now flat. I wrapped a roll of Jute around and around so it's non slip and more comfy than just the wood. It's been almost a month and the new addition has been found treasure!

Mites NEW
by: Marie

Since my birds are not exposed to outside birds or animals or wild birds my vet said mites should not be a problem and didn't recommend exposing the birds to the chemicals usually used in mite treatment. He also removed the leg bands on their first visit.
Glad your bird seems to be doing well. My canary bathes daily in a deep pie plate I place on a card table covered with a waterproof pad. Sometimes he is in the water splashing for five minutes. Dips his head in and throws the water over his back, flaps his wings and swishes his tail back and forth. A joy to watch.

One-leg NEW
by: Marie

Try bending Comfy Perch so it is on or almost on the floor so he can hop on it. As he learns he can balance on one leg, move or bend it higher bit by bit - may take a month or more for the first move. Give him plenty of time to get used to each position. If it is on the opposite side of the cage from a higher perch he will eventually fly from one perch to another. Canaries love to fly.
Since I have a large flight cage, I have perches at several levels. One is in front on his seed and water cups so he land there and just hop over on the narrow cup perches. He also has food dishes on the floor of his cage.
My canary is in molt and not flying much - sleeps a lot. Also not singing, but I expect he will begin again in November.

Cage for One-legged NEW
by: Marie

I'm not a camera person.
I measured the inside of the cage and went to a building supply/lumber store. They cut the plexiglass to my measurements and drilled a few holes near the edges and corners. Since I don't use the wooden perches that came with my cage I used them as a foundation for the plexiglass and also tied heavy cotton yarn through the holes and the cage wire to stabilize the new floor. My cage wire is vertical with a few horizontally, so I could position the new floor on one of the horizontal wires using the perches.
Hope this helps.

Cage for One-legged NEW
by: Marie

Your canary is probably still in recovery and needs to learn new skills. My cage is a Wrought Iron Flight Cage 31.5W 20.5D x 34.5H, on casters with a storage shelf below. I placed plexiglass on wooden dowels to divide the height to 17 inches, cover the floor with a towel under banquet-table paper which I buy in big rolls and cut to size. Food and water dishes are on the bottom and others within inches of the bottom.I use shallow, glass dishes like coasters for most food although he has regular cups a few inches off the bottom. It's difficult to dip into a deep seed cup while on one leg. I also have rope perches near the top at both ends and my canary flies back and forth and sleeps there. When he goes on the bottom of the cage he circles like an airplane going in for a landing, so his landing is a glide, not a mere drop.

Can you tell me what kind of cage you have? My one legged canary will not get up on the rope perch to get to his food dishes. I put his food and water on the bottom in baby food lids., we went to PetSmart to see if there was a different kind of cage where he could get around better but they all have that biglastic bottom. Thanks, kay

Fresh greens NEW
by: Marie

My birds, canary especially, get a sprig of fresh broccoli almost every day. I fasten it in the cages next to perches with plastic clips. They eat the flowerette as well as hollow out the stems if I skin off some of the tough outside.
When I got my canary he was almost white with a few black feathers. I figured he was partly a Red Factor Canary, and with daily broccoli- betacarotine - he is now deep yellow - almost orange. Birds can eat a number of fresh vegetables. My vet always asks, "Besides seeds, are you feeding him some people-feed?"

Rope perch NEW
by: Anonymous

Sorry that was suppose to be rope perch. I have them in my African Greyson cage. I didn't know you could feed them all of that. That is pretty much what I feed my grey. The breeder of this little canary said to feed him raw greens, so that is what I have been doing. Yesterday I saw him up in his seed cup where I put his wheat germ, he loves wheat germ, so he is getting around a little better. I will get him a little rope perch to sit on. Thanks

Perches & Feed NEW
by: Marie

I'm not familiar with the road perch. The Comfy Perch is cotton threads tightly twisted together. I have never had a problem of fraying threads with the canary or parakeets. The birds go to the vet every 4-5 months for nail trims. Nails will curl if not trimmed. My birds get the Dr. Foster & Smith signature Series Premium Blends seeds. I also cook split peas, lentils, kidney beans, check peas, Navy beans, barley, bulgar wheat and brown rice which I freeze in small plastic cups. Once a week I thaw one cup in small amount of water, add finely chopped frozen mixed vegetables, cook 7 minutes in microwave. Add some boiling broth to two TBSP of whole wheat cos cos. While that is soaking, I cook mixture another 4 minutes with 2 TBSP Orzo or Egg Pastira. Let soak until water is taken up. Mix and refrigerate. Serve small amount each day.

I have only birds for pets. Don't allow him out of the cage if you have cats, dogs or people going in and out outside doors.
I purchase the "Comfy Perches" from Doctors Foster and Smith online - DrsFosterSmith.com
They come in various lengths and thicknesses. I use the 3/4" ones for small birds. They can be bent to fit your cage, just don't put them over feeding dishes. Perhaps start by putting one only a few inches off the floor and later another one higher, but wait until the wound is totally healed so he doesn't forget he doesn't have a foot and land on it. My bird uses the stump for balancing.
I think your bird should sing again when he is well. Mine starts singing in November or December after a summer break. I play the "Classic Canary" CD often during this time. I got it from wed site.

Really, he flys around loose? My dogs or cat would get my little guy. He has a wire sided cage but the bottom is flat and I put a bunch of paper towels in the bottom. So far he has not left the bottom of the cage to perch. Where can I get the soft landing perch you were talking about? He squats on the bottom of his cage too. Do you think he will ever sing again. He had such a beautiful song.i feel so bad for him that I didn't notice this sooner. Thanks

One-leg NEW
by: Marie

I have a canary with no toes on one foot. I use the 3/4 inch "Comfy Perches" so he can get a sure grip on a non-abrasive landing surface to save wear and tear on his remaining foot. When resting, he squats down on the perch.
He has a flight cage, but I divided the 35" height in half and have a towel under the cage-liner paper on TOP of the wire so his landing is soft and his good leg doesn't go down between the wires.
He doesn't seem aware he is handicapped. The cage is open most of the day and he has several favorite perching places including a spot in the morning sun on the arm of a towel-protected chair.
He flies a lot every day, visits the parakeets in their cages, takes a daily bath in deep pie plate and sings loudly from November to July.

Peg Leg Canaries Do Fine
by: Darren

Sorry to hear of your bird's issue.

But the good news is that, YES, he can absolutely use a perch.

Reminds me of the hen I had a few years ago that got her leg caught in the wiring of the breeding cage and broke it.

I amputated and she lived a long happy life and continued to breed :-)
