Canary Diet and Canary Health:

Hello Mr. Walker,

Thank you for all the interesting information.

I feed our canary in 2 feeders, one has commercial canary seed mix with the added vitamins, the other is a blend of hemp seed, sesame, dehusked pumpkin seed, dehusked sunflower seed, pine cone seeds,
and a drizzle of coconut, all available at the health store. He definitely prefers the home made hemp seed mix.

Daily I give him a wedge of apple and cucumber or grape.

Good tip on feeding the egg AND the shells, for calcium.

When available I boil up some diortica, common stinging nettle, and give that to him, he enjoys the stringy stems as they dry out, keeps him nibbling for several days.

I also give him a crunched-up paper napkin, he seems to enjoy having something to shred and clean his beak.

Hopefully next year I can get him a girlfriend, the cage is huge and favors breeding. He sings like an angel but he seems lonely.
